Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Ranbir Kapoor's nude walk scene

What truly cemented the success of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal was the filmmaker’s unwavering conviction in various aspects of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer. At multiple points in the film, one might feel that the makers indulged excessively, only to be met with yet another scene that made the previous one appear restrained. Yet, none of these elements were toned down, ultimately making Animal an extremely polarising cinematic experience. Among the boldest sequences in the film was undoubtedly Ranbir’s Ranvijay Singh undertaking a nude walk after successfully undergoing a heart transplant. In a conversation on Game Changers, Sandeep shared insights into his rapport with Ranbir and how they managed to execute such audacious scenes.

“The success of Animal is due to the understanding between Ranbir and me,” Sandeep remarked, emphasising that another actor might have found certain scenes difficult to embrace. “Whatever I liked, he liked, and I’m still not sure how it happened. Even when I was questioning whether we were on the right path, he simply told me to do what I wanted and not ask him anything.”

Using the nude walk scene as an example, Sandeep explained, “We had to apply a prosthetic for the thighs and lower body, which worked perfectly during the test shoot. However, on the actual shooting day, it didn’t look right. Initially, we intended to film the scene with full focus, using props to strategically cover the groin as he walked. But since the prosthetics were not functioning as expected, I decided we would shoot the scene out of focus.”

The Arjun Reddy director acknowledged that such a situation could easily frustrate an actor, especially considering the extensive hours spent on measuring and preparing the prosthetics. “He just agreed immediately. There was no discussion. It was a ten-minute conversation where I explained that shooting it out of focus would make the scene feel more eerie and intriguing. And he was ready,” Sandeep recalled, reinforcing the idea that a strong camaraderie between an actor and director can create a comfortable working environment. “See, the results can be anything, but when this level of trust exists, the filmmaking process becomes enjoyable—it’s all about conviction.”
